On Saturday 8th and Sunday 9th August, Sam (Little City Lincolnshire) and Emily (Little City Sheffield) headed to Withernsea, Yorkshire, to be part of the Blue Light Weekend events. This is a free annual event along the South Promenade in Withernsea which celebrates emergency and armed services with air displays, live music and community events.
Each year, the team of volunteers add something new and exciting to the weekend’s line up and thisyear, it was US! Jenny, head of organising the children’s events, had seen Little City the previous year at Countryside Lincs and knew it would be the perfect fit for the weekend so got in touch!
Sam and Emily arrived in Withernsea bright and early to set the city up and get ready for a busy 2 days! As the event was helping to celebrate and honour the work of emergency services, it felt appropriate to enhance our beach role-play area with touches linked to water safety such as RNLI dressing up, life-jackets and information about being safe around water. Whilst children were playing, Sam and Emily spoke to children about how to be safe in and around water, including what to do if they were in trouble and who they needed to call. They were visited by ‘Frankie the fire dog’ mascot who posed for a photo in the emergency services!
During the course of the weekend, the city was enjoyed by hundreds of children and their families and it was lovely meeting lots of new little ones, most of whom hadn’t heard of Little City before and some who were Little City superfans! There was so much to do at the whole event, however, lots of parents and carers commented how their little ones kept asking to come back to the city (they have good taste!).
It is safe to say that Sam and Emily were super busy for the 2 days and only stopped for about 10 minutes to grab a bite to eat but they wouldn’t have it any other way!
Huge thanks to Jenny and the Blue Light Weekend team for asking Little City to be part of such a special event! See you next year!
